The earlier article continues further down the page, providing foundational insights.
π’ Corporate Transparency Act (CTA) Changes
In March 2025, the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) announced an interim rule that exempted U.S.-formed companies from beneficial ownership reporting under the CTA. In February 2026, the Federal Trade Commission removed its 2024 rule that banned most worker noncompete agreements. This aligns with recent court rulings that blocked this rule nationwide. Small businesses can now enforce noncompete agreements more easily, which may help protect their interests.

As of 2024, the average interest rate on small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) loans rose to 6.77%, up from 6.06% in 2023. This increase in borrowing costs may affect small businesses planning to take out loans for expansion or operations.
π Tax Law Adjustments
The 2025 tax law introduced a more favorable startup stock exclusion. For stock issued after July 4, 2025, the exclusion on qualified small business stock increased to 50% after a three-year hold and 100% after five years. This change benefits small business investors and may encourage more investment in startups.

End of October 2026 Update
Steuben Glass, a name that once evoked images of prestige and sophistication, appears to be vanishing for good. The former American icon known for its handcrafted crystal is shutting down its only remaining factory.
The last factory, located in Corning, New York, is being closed on November 29th of this yearβa week after Thanksgiving. As profits have become elusive, the prospects of reviving the century-old vanity brand seem daunting and exceedingly slim.
Although the exceptionally transparent glass is still lauded, the company has struggled to find its footingβin 2008 Corning Inc. sold the business to Schottenstein Stores Corp, a retail operator based out of Columbus, Ohio.
The companyβs struggles can be attributed to innovation failures. Critics cite uninspiring designs, an overseas production shift and the inclusion of cheaper engraving methods into the manufacturing process as principal contributors for the companyβs demise.
The failure to innovate coupled with a generation-long slide in demand for fine crystal was perpetuated by the financial crisis that rocked the United States in September of 2008. The majority of the factoryβs 60 workers will be laid off and Steubenβs flagship New York store will shut its doors once inventory is sold off.
